Room 14 is the Mirror room

On July 14, 1789, when Bastille fell, only the king and a handful of people knew about the thousands and thousands of secret documents stored in the king’s library. The task of devising a method of concealment fell to Robespierre. If the English found out about the documents concerning the support for the American Revolution, they would have certainly invaded France.

Masons have been carving the layers of limestone and gypsum under the city of Paris for centuries, using the rock to build the palaces on the surface. Robespierre commissioned a map of all these catacombs and created a labyrinth of underground storage locations connected according to a secret code in such a way that one room connects to all the other rooms. He transferred the skeletons from all of Paris’ cemeteries to the top rooms. He built the ossuary to block access to the levels below and scare everyone away. He sent fifty thousand loyal spies disguised as aristocratic refugees to all of Europe’s courts to gather information and help preempt any attack on France. Their descendants, over one million of them now, still cherish the creed of the revolution in their adoptive lands: liberty, equality, fraternity. The words don’t mean much to us nowadays, but these people continue to serve France and the board with the same dedication.

Robespierre faced arrest and execution on July 28, 1794, without a trial or formal charge. He was the greatest lawyer in France, and nobody could win an argument with him in court. The only people left with full access to the catacombs’ secrets were the members of the National Library’s Board of Directors.

Centiki is the computer program the board uses to control the world’s financial markets from its underground headquarters. The exchange uses Centiki as its digital currency. The librarians conspire to spend their ill-gotten gains to save the planet from desertification. They plan to cover the Sahara Desert with a solar converter to lower the global temperature by five degrees Celsius. Climate change is not their only concern. As long as we have inequality, hunger, and extremism, the world will not be cool, even at temperatures below freezing.
